Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation. Our work in Chinatown would be impossible without the talent, time, and generosity of our volunteer community. Please read below to learn about our volunteer guidelines and current opportunities to get involved.

Eligibility

  • Minimum age: you must be at least 16 years old and at least 19 years old for Chinatown Storytelling Centre roles
  • Commitment: varies based on each opportunity, but in general, we expect a minimum of 1 shift per month (4 hours)
  • Screening and training: you must be able to participate in a face-to-face interview and attend a training session, see the position descriptions for dates and times.
  • Communication requirements: for all positions that interact with the public, you must feel comfortable speaking English. Volunteers are expected to actively start conversations with visitors.
  • You must be willing to obtain a criminal record check

Current Opportunities

   Chinatown Storytelling Centre

Our Curatorial team is always looking for volunteer support with our collections and archives. Duties may include photography, scanning/digitizing archival materials, data entry, translation, transcription, cataloguing, and research. A perfect opportunity for those who prefer to be behind the scenes and want to gain hands-on experience with museum curation and collections. Training to be provided.

* Some experience or relevant studies required. You must be at least 19 years of age to be eligible to apply.

Qualifications

  • Familiar with Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of local history, or interest in learning
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions
  • Photography experience and/or capturing oral history is an asset

Ensure our guests have a positive and seamless experience visiting the Chinatown Storytelling Centre. Duties include welcoming guests to the Centre, managing admission sales, distributing visitor maps, supporting our retail and security staff, and encouraging engagement at the Visitor Input Station. An excellent opportunity for those interested in hospitality, management and office administration. 

Share your enthusiasm and communication skills to inspire our visitors to make the most of their visit at the Chinatown Storytelling Centre. Docents may also participate in our educational programs by helping students learn more about Chinatown’s history, and support Guest Services as needed. An excellent role for extroverts, and those who thrive on public speaking. 

Training to be provided. Fluency in additional languages is an asset.

   General

Help us spread the word on the Chinatown Foundation’s work including the Storytelling Centre, Vintage Thrift Shop, and many other projects. This role involves support with occasional outreach opportunities and events for the Foundation. Our Outreach Team will assist Foundation staff with event set-up, take-down, and hosting booths at events such as community festivals, fundraisers, and exhibition openings. Duties may also involve selling raffle tickets, merchandise, memberships, and publicizing the Chinatown Foundation’s many projects. An ideal role for volunteers who enjoy interacting with the public and event marketing. Fluency in additional languages is an asset.
